The Antarctic continent, with the floating ice surrounding it, has been explored, mapped and studied scientifically in the 20th century, although many of its points remain unknown. Amundsen and Scott with their respective groups arrived in the South Pole in the summer of 1911-1912 and brought to light elements of the ice layer of the area that the world scientific community did not know until then. The scientific study continues today on the ice and oceans of frozen Continent, where both present and potential future reactions to climate change are explored. Questions about the possibility of future global sea level rise, for example, can only be answered with long-term measurements showing whether the thickness of Antarctic ice remains compact or diluted.
