About an hour’s drive south of Lisbon, we reach Cabanas no Rio in the village of Comporta. The area known for its white sandy beaches, fine wines, fresh fish and spectacular rice fields. These two wooden “huts” have been lodged into the natural landscape of the Sado river and host a wide variety of wildlife such as flamingos, storks and dolphins. It’s considered to be one of the best places for bird watching in Portugal. The first cabin has a living room with a small kitchen that is equipped for simple meal preparation. This cabin is designed to expose its interior to the open landscape. The second cabin has a spacious bedroom with a bathroom. Built by architect Manuel Aires Mateus, they cover a total area of just 28 square meters. Visitors can explore the surrounding area by land, sea, canoe, or horseback.
