Willie Christie: a very distinctive style: Then & Now

From Vogue covers to Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut album – featuring of iconic artists, such as Grace Jones, Cary Grant, David Bowie and Jerry Hall – photographer and filmmaker Willie Christie captured it all. Now, her eclectic body of work has been brought together for the first time, with the publication of the new photo book Willie Christie: a very distinctive style: Then & Now by ACC Art Books, creating a vibrant retrospective.

“I’ve wanted to do a book for a few years,” says Christie. “I scanned all my images about 15 years ago and only then did I see a theme running through. A look where, although there were other influences, it was my work. I saw that all my images had their own individuality. I had begun to think by then, that my work had some interest in the world of fashion. And maybe outside of it. Time is a great observer.”

Christie’s photographs highlight a particular moment in time, eschewing sentimentality and a cinematic depiction of the 1970s and early 1980s. “I hope readers will discover the feel, look, clothes and style of [ the era]. I hope they might find photos they know and like that they didn’t know I catpured. I hope they will find images they have never seen before that will bring back a distant memory. That they will feel something. But ultimately, I just hope they like my work and like the book. That the few behind-the-scenes stories are interesting and will offer a glimpse into life – as it was back then.”
