City life in the 1950s-1970s

The exhibition “ASTYGRAFIA / URBANOGRAPHY. The life of the city in the decades 1950-1970”. A group, thematic exhibition about the urban experience through the eyes of visual artists and filmmakers presented at the National Art Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum.

To trace the human experience of the urban experience, the exhibition brings the visual arts – painting, sculpture, printmaking, installations, photography, drawings and posters – into conversation with excerpts from popular Greek cinema, critical realist films and eccentric narratives. Presenting 78 creators, 202 visual works and 22 films, “ASTYGRAPHIA” attempts to map the entire scope of the concept of “urban experience” by sketching the social subject within the city, with all the charm it can exert but also with all the limitations or the exclusions that accompany it, “with the exhibition narrative constantly moving from the large to the small scale, from the panoramic shot to the close-up”, as the director of EPMAS and curator of the exhibition, Syrago Tsiara, explains.

“Artists interpret the city not only as a built environment that contains them, but also as a daily experience, a context with which they are confronted either in terms of recognition, safety and acceptance or in terms of detection, negotiation and conflict”, also states Ms. . Ciara for this historical as well as topical exposure to a fluid, living world that constantly offers its members – each one of us – challenges that invite them to confront new facts and shape their position and identity.

The exhibition “ASTYGRAFIA / URBANOGRAPHY. The life of the city in the decades 1950-1970” will be hosted until March 3, 2024 in the Hall of Periodical Exhibitions of the Central Building of the National Gallery. It includes 202 works of art, of which half come from the National Gallery Collection and the rest are included in the exhibition on loan from public and private collections. The exhibition features 22 films (excerpts from 18 feature films and 4 complete short films). It is divided into 7 sections with the titles: “Scenography”, “Nostalgia”, “Yapi”, “Close-up”, “View”, “Dreams and Conflicts”, “Materials”.
