Following in the footsteps of similar series The New Look, which focused on Christian Dior, Becoming Karl Lagerfeld charts the rise of Lagerfeld as he becomes one of the most formidable forces in French fashion.
German-Spanish actor Daniel Brühl, known for his roles in films like Inglourious Basterds, Rush, All Quiet on the Western Front and Captain America: Civil War, stars as Lagerfeld early on in his career, before he’d made a name for himself and became the iconic figure we know today. The French-language series begins in early 1970s Paris, with Karl aged 38 working in design, but unknown to the wider world. It’s during this era that he meets Jacques de Bascher (Maid’s Théodore Pellerin), a dashing but quietly troubling young dandy, and very quickly falls in love with him.
Karl, though, remains set on becoming something bigger, and his growing ambition sees him decide to become a rival to Yves Saint Laurent (Good Grief actor Arnaud Valois), one of the biggest names in haute couture and someone who Karl counts as a friend.
This is a series that is just as much about fashion and looking good as it is about the man himself. His pursuit of achieving greatness often risks pushing people away, but throughout the six episode series we see just how he became such a dominant force in fashion. The official trailer, which you can watch below, shows Karl brushing shoulders with some of fashion’s biggest names (and not always getting along with them), and working his way to the top.
All six episodes of Becoming Karl Lagerfeld are available to stream right now on Disney+.
