The power of thinking

by Maria Mylona

A famous quote by Lao Tzu refers to the power of our thoughts and how they affect our lives. “Watch your thoughts, for they become your words. Watch your words, for they become your actions. Watch your actions, for they become your habits. Watch your habits, for they become your character. Take care of your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

We have about 70,000 thoughts a day and the thoughts that become our awareness are influenced by our experiences, our perception and our upbringing. Being self-aware is important to understanding the thoughts and beliefs we have about ourselves and the world. That is why it is a very useful tool to recognize, evaluate and respond to the way we think, so that we can make long-term changes in our mood and behavior.

Many times it is not the situations that determine our feelings, but the meaning we attribute to the situations and it is connected to our emotional and behavioral reaction, rather than a situation in itself.

Therefore it is important to cultivate positive thoughts and habits that will bring us closer to our desired goal. It is important to remember that any change takes time and the path to growth and self-improvement is not linear. Patience and perseverance are the only ingredients to modify our thoughts, actions and habits to become the best version of ourselves and achieve the completion of the desired results for our lives.

‘There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so…’
William Shakespeare
